A recent survey revealed that the extent and frequency
of checking of x-ray equipment was very variable, as was the adequacy
of corrective procedures after faults were identified. As a result
representatives from the College of Radiographers, the Health and
Safety Executive, the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine
and the National Radiological Protection Board detailed the necessary
checks in the "Recommended Standards for the Routine Performance
Testing of Diagnostic X-ray Imaging Systems".
Legally,
employers have direct responsibility for ensuring that equipment
used in connection with medical exposures is maintained, so as to
be capable of delivering doses that are as low as reasonably practicable
in a clinical context.
"All X-ray imaging equipment should be subject to regular
performance checks which, if necessary, should lead to appropriate
corrective action or replacement."
